Visit Sponsor's Site. The FGS β "The Friendly Golf Society"
The FGS, "The Friendly Golf Society," was formed in March 2019 by Richard Walker, who brought together a handful of members from the former Sobar Society in Calahonda. Richard's leadership created a relaxed and fun atmosphere during matches and presentations, helping FGS quickly establish itself as one of the leading local golf societies on the Costa del Sol. Within just a few months, it attracted over 80 members.
The number of participants for each match grew rapidly, starting from around 20 players in the early days to over 40 for competitions held every two weeks due to high demand. The vibrant presentations soon became renowned in the community, celebrating not just the winners, who received numerous prizes funded by entry fees, but also the "losers."
A unique tradition emerged with the dreaded "Owl." The "loser" of the day had to dress in an owl onesie, dance around the venue, and keep the infamous "Owl Trophy" until the next match. This lighthearted tradition added to the society's fun and inclusive atmosphere.
Our Annual Champion Golfer Tournament has proven highly popular in recent seasons. Additional awards introduced at the annual presentation include Players' Player of the Year, where members vote for their favorite player, and Chairman's Player of the Year, which acknowledges quality members deserving of special recognition after a year of sometimes tough but always enjoyable golf.
The Champion Golfer Award is given to the member with the best seven results over the season. This prestigious title is often hotly contested until the very last match. Past winners include Richard Walker (2022), Spencer Stewart (2023), and Kieran Lawson (2024).
As with all thriving societies, FGS continues to evolve and refresh its systems. For 2026, we are excited to unveil The New FGS!
We have updated our handicap system to better suit the current landscape, adjusted cuts and strokes, and reorganized the league championship table. To maintain better timing and efficiency, we have also reduced the number of players per match and now hold presentations directly at the clubhouse on the same day as the matches.
Membership is now only β¬60 for lifelong membership, which includes a "Ping" society golf shirt. Our society is proudly a non-profit organization, ensuring that every euro members contribute is reinvested back into the society, whether on match days or throughout the year.
We play on the second and last Sunday of each month, year-round, providing fantastic opportunities to enjoy golf, camaraderie, and fun on the Costa del Sol.
